Haitises means "Mountains Land" in the Taino language. Los Haitises National Park is the largest natural park in the country and extends over a territory of 860 KM ². It counts about 58 calcareous islets called “Mogotes " and more than 135 caves in which the last Tainos took refuge. This grandiose marine park seems to be a unique vegetable maze with deep fjords upholstered with mangroves, which hosts an impressive ornithological fauna estimated around 100 species. This exceptional painting reveals a page of Hispaniola’s history in a classified natural site and under the protection of the Ministry of the Environment since 1968. Difficult to avoid using organizing excursions to visit the park, the number of visitors on the site is limited and regulated to ensure the environmental preservation of the park. The national park of Los Haitises is visited exclusively by boat, fishing boats or catamaran, inside the Bay. Its mountainous part extending from San Lorenzo Bay to the southern area of Samana Bay in the land is simply impenetrable.
From Santa Barbara, Sanchez or Puerto Bahia discover the island of birds refuge of pelicans, frigates, herons, black hawk eagle among others, the connecting caves, with their pictographs and paintings, in which the Tainos were hidden, the deep mangroves and the dozens of islets scattered throughout the Bay.
