WORLD OCEAN DAY turns its decade anniversary, Las Terrenas

The Samana Peninsula sounds like an the example of a region aware of its planet and wants to offer to the future generations a Planet getting better.

Since 2009, every 8 June is celebrated as World Ocean Day, a date established by the United Nations General Assembly to protect the environment, to recall at the global level the great role that the oceans play in the life of the planet and to raise public awareness of the consequences that human activity has on this important source of food and medicines, and an essential for the biosphère, while 13,000,000 tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean each year, causing, among other things, the death of 100,000 marine species per year.

As in 2018, Samaná was the venue for this celebration of events organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Samaná Tourist Cluster, the Hotel Association, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources in the Grand Bahia Príncipe of el Portillo.
This year the Tourism and Relationship to the Oceans conference was held: A look at the country’s commitment and agenda 2030, by Inka Matilla, UNDP resident representative, along with other activities that accompanied the celebration as:

Cleaning in different points of the coast with voluntary and governmental groups, near to the beach Mar Gorda;

A day of cleaning corals with certified divers at different points of the reef in charge of diving schools;

The inauguration of a symbolic work of art, inspired by the relationship between human and the sea, located on the beach Mar Gorda: FUERZA DE REMO Y SENCILLEZ DE ESPUMA

The celebration of World Ocean Day seeks to raise awareness of the effective conservation and sustainable use of oceans, seas and their resources, as well as to promote marine scientific research,for fishing, work at sea  in order to influence the formulation of public policies that contribute to the reduction of inequalities; gender equality and the preservation of underwater life, within the framework of Agenda 2030.
